It's been a busy week here, getting used to new routines. Hopefully there will be some sewing time now that the mayhem is starting to settle down.<br />

Happy First Day Of PreSchool, Little Boo!Jaiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14176343820988807993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4858301704564792190.post-90214258782889429882013-09-11T04:08:00.002-07:002013-09-11T04:32:48.227-07:00Happy Birthday Boo! And More Pants...Guess who turned three on Saturday?! We had a wonderful family party for him and a fantastic day together. He ran around the house yelling, "I'm so happy!", so I think it was a success. <br />
<br />

Since my Boo is starting preschool on Monday while deep in the trenches of potty training, more elastic waist pull-on pants have been on my sewing agenda. Look at this adorable little pair:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz2qPV-lVehS_Nwcv1RrqiBuaTPPZdb-UMXrs3MHewIVNDxD1ZhPt89QBtxzpr_UVZalhgjARFl3Ur69nEMlY3ZBujPTwvLG2sfMYfDEiJ-dov3v-BblloBQYtg8VU8XvWGbfszPMvzlLx/s1600/IMG_7017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz2qPV-lVehS_Nwcv1RrqiBuaTPPZdb-UMXrs3MHewIVNDxD1ZhPt89QBtxzpr_UVZalhgjARFl3Ur69nEMlY3ZBujPTwvLG2sfMYfDEiJ-dov3v-BblloBQYtg8VU8XvWGbfszPMvzlLx/s400/IMG_7017.JPG" width="287" /></a></div>
<br />
I made the pants out of a repurposed thrift store pillowcase and used scraps for the contrast. All told, these pants cost me $.50!<br />
<br />

All in all, another successful pair.<br />
<br />
I'm currently working on a pair of cranberry pants in the same pattern and then I want to hunt down some pants fabrics in navy blue, khaki, and maybe a purple. That should cover all my bases and give a good selection of neutrals and brights.<br />
<br />
After the school pants, I think it's time to focus on sewing for me (I want to sew my way through Cal Patch's book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Design-It-Yourself-Clothes-Patternmaking-Cal-Patch/dp/0307451399" target="_blank">Design It Yourself Clothes</a>) and FINALLY getting back to designing children's wear. Boo is starting preschool on Monday which means I have 3 glorious hours to sew everyday. I plan to work really hard on my business and finally get it off the ground. Stay tuned for sneak peeks!Jaiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14176343820988807993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4858301704564792190.post-8247810590001302822013-09-07T04:32:00.003-07:002013-09-07T04:32:56.795-07:00L'Shana Tova!L'Shana Tova! Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, ends this evening and I just wanted to show y'all the pretty decorations that my toddler and I made to decorate our dining room for the large family dinners we held for the holiday. Since it's traditional to eat apples and honey to celebrate the new year, because they are thought to symbolize a sweet beginning to the coming year, I decided that apple printing would be the best way to go.<br />

<br />
Boo and I printed apples onto white drawing paper with tempera paint in red and green. We each used half of a Fuji apple, and switched halves partway through because he wanted a chance to share. How could I say no to that?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj6xj7Ajfw54d9HUb1Vvz2Xi_DbLaB01orDDRk6TJp6u3eUa95mBk3tKxTJYJhyphenhyphencf4JD4rz2a_OT4qYHwjXHBogdNMc2X-xA3dG4qZXQ9N8H_VkTSLbZ3ruOJYObFA6-QCwgyp8LVstnQh/s1600/IMG_7143.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj6xj7Ajfw54d9HUb1Vvz2Xi_DbLaB01orDDRk6TJp6u3eUa95mBk3tKxTJYJhyphenhyphencf4JD4rz2a_OT4qYHwjXHBogdNMc2X-xA3dG4qZXQ9N8H_VkTSLbZ3ruOJYObFA6-QCwgyp8LVstnQh/s400/IMG_7143.JPG" width="397" /></a></div>
<br />
After they dried, I cut out apples from the paper and hung them on fishing line to make garlands. Then I framed a really cool print that Boo had made to use as a central focus to the wall. I hung the print and arranged the garlands in strips around it. It was really cute and made a great background for the shindig.<br />
<br />
I also baked two GIANT loaves of challah - aren't they gorgeous?!<br />

<br />
When fall comes, I want flannel pajamas to snuggle in and I've decided that my almost 3 year old son needs to discover the love of flannel pajamas. So I went into my sewing room last night and whipped up two pairs of adorable flannel pants for him to wear to bed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg23QPDAdRRTppGZhmB_zBT8rn6zH7S793zfKRcvNhIf_rHz5VNsSjP9g0MGLFA-gMwaGRThX92f-wskmYCd-3MgXb5K2Fx3a8C6bxj44geUvxFPoNViI_ABGzplLVvDQB92zEDN4LnQ_aW/s1600/Pants1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg23QPDAdRRTppGZhmB_zBT8rn6zH7S793zfKRcvNhIf_rHz5VNsSjP9g0MGLFA-gMwaGRThX92f-wskmYCd-3MgXb5K2Fx3a8C6bxj44geUvxFPoNViI_ABGzplLVvDQB92zEDN4LnQ_aW/s400/Pants1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
He had begged me for Monster's Inc. fabric in June and being a huge fan myself, I caved, even though it was purchased on a 90 degree day in July. Well, it was perfect for this project! Aren't they adorable?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivSDlLAfSppdptmCTkxJLNoGTIMAZ1SrD3JXtX0xI9hAkniGNUQsbHwRMbSVgWkRbCaGf6NdzfHK7T14a5gFb6boruzwj9YEzrXMUvdKafVtAv-Mnzaudk4-vUyiKn259wWO1nAEB4Yl68/s1600/IMG_7138.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivSDlLAfSppdptmCTkxJLNoGTIMAZ1SrD3JXtX0xI9hAkniGNUQsbHwRMbSVgWkRbCaGf6NdzfHK7T14a5gFb6boruzwj9YEzrXMUvdKafVtAv-Mnzaudk4-vUyiKn259wWO1nAEB4Yl68/s640/IMG_7138.JPG" width="456" /></a></div>
<br />
This is made of a construction vehicle printed flannel, something Boo also picked out himself. His current favorite things are bulldozers and dump trucks, so it was only fitting to make these now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I love the two pairs of pants. They took about 2 hours total, from cutting to final pressing, and are folded and waiting for him to wear. I think I need to make him another 2 or 3 pairs, but those might wait for the winter holidays. I still need to make myself and The Fellah some pairs too! I hadn't been since I was seven years old, when my second grade class went on a school field trip. I remember loving it there though, and a recent perusal of the Plimoth Plantation website made me really excited to bring my family for the first time. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzIPkP-4sXBejSw8GL5zHI3Y1gTMmShpW_qcSXjmoqp9fyX-xi7DleSx9VVpF8c_0iUrSYqav70I0qSBDm65gKiBiGn0sHnvLGUIWYieKOihOJ3ApukfRdyJHFeKh2rMvoqM6Vry6vuewf/s1600/IMG_7106.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzIPkP-4sXBejSw8GL5zHI3Y1gTMmShpW_qcSXjmoqp9fyX-xi7DleSx9VVpF8c_0iUrSYqav70I0qSBDm65gKiBiGn0sHnvLGUIWYieKOihOJ3ApukfRdyJHFeKh2rMvoqM6Vry6vuewf/s400/IMG_7106.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's about a 45 minute drive from our house and it was rainy the entire trip. Luckily for us, the clouds parted and the sun came out as soon as we parked in the lot! <br />
<br />
We visited the <a href="http://www.plimoth.org/what-see-do/wampanoag-homesite" target="_blank">Wampanoag Homesite</a> first, a recreation of a 17th century Wampanoag village. Boo was most excited by the small Wampanoag children running around in loincloths and no other clothing. He thought that was incredibly naughty since he isn't allowed to run around without pants in public. Personally, I was intrigued by the demonstrations of boat burning and the man making his own moccasins. The best part was talking to all the actual Wampanoag Indians who were native to the Plymouth area and working at Plimoth Plantation as reenactors.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAugoE80XaihH2eym9ZjwDDnTGLbfQ1zvjAA8SWY3r5Ksy6M-7TdZBEvtvxpE3FCazdc6vq-wIHJFRBSagRi3x6-l1l_7951haHvSRTQe0OYB40SsfTznqodC2FHSPf3Rw3fMvppa9z_h_/s1600/IMG_7086.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAugoE80XaihH2eym9ZjwDDnTGLbfQ1zvjAA8SWY3r5Ksy6M-7TdZBEvtvxpE3FCazdc6vq-wIHJFRBSagRi3x6-l1l_7951haHvSRTQe0OYB40SsfTznqodC2FHSPf3Rw3fMvppa9z_h_/s400/IMG_7086.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next we moved on to the <a href="http://www.plimoth.org/what-see-do/craft-center" target="_blank">Craft Center</a>. This is where we spent the most time. It's only one room in a large modern building, but it's where modern craftspeople are preserving the historical skills of the settlers and Wampanoags. There was a potter, a man creating gorgeous feather headdresses, a seamstress, a weaver, and a woodworker.<br />

<br />
I spent about 30 minutes chatting with the seamstress and the weaver. I love historical costuming. I learned all about card weaving, an art that I'd read about but never seen. Now I can't wait to give it a try. As for the garments, I've made the same clothes that she was sewing as I'd worked on The Crucible in the past, so it was fun to discuss historical resources and technique.<br />
<br />
My husband and son spent the whole time chatting with the woodworker. He was building the most amazing carved chairs, tables, and chests. I can't wait until my husband retires so he can start building like that in his free time!<br />

We also visited the potter and saw all of his gorgeous wares. Boo immediately asked for a potter's wheel when "he was a big boy", and of course I said yes. Even if he never uses it, I will! I love to throw pots, even though it's been almost 15 years since I last got to play with clay.<br />

<br />
Lastly, we visited the recreation <a href="http://www.plimoth.org/what-see-do/17th-century-english-village" target="_blank">17th Century English Settler Village</a>. We poked our heads into all the different homes and buildings in the village and chatted with all the costumed historical reenactors. Boo got to help a housewife made bread and loved poking the dough. He also loved climbing onto all the cannons in the fort. The Fellah loved talking to the settlers about the politics of 1627 and examining their gardens. I just loved talking to them about their crafts, be it sewing, knitting, barrel making, or cooking. <br />
<br />
All in all, it was a really fun visit. We spent about 3 hours there, a long time for a 3 year old toddler. We left around lunch time, just when the crowds picked up, and made it hope in time for nap. I spent the rest of the afternoon looking up all the things that got me inspired! I now want to make preserves and pickles, sew more clothes for my family, get back into spinning, convince The Fellah to make all of our furniture, and of course, bake. Luckily I need to bake 4 challah, an apple pie, an apple cake, and a lemon birthday cake, all in the next 6 days. That should give me a good fix!Jaiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14176343820988807993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4858301704564792190.post-45831689994465018012013-08-27T16:54:00.002-07:002013-08-27T16:54:42.458-07:00 A Backpack For BooMy little guy is turning three in just a few days. In addition to planning his birthday party - A Tiny Foods themed party - I'm getting ready for him to start preschool. What does every little boy need for the first day of school? A new backpack!<br />
<br />
I decided to make the <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/2009/03/finally-here-toddler-backpack-pattern/" target="_blank">Toddler Backpack</a> from <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/patterns/" target="_blank">Made By Rae</a>. This is my first time using one of her patterns but I read all of the positive reviews on them and I'm excited to give it a try. It's all techniques that I'm comfortable with - piping, zippers, linings, straps - so I know I can muck my way through any unclear instructions. Besides, the pattern is SO CUTE. And I have the CUTEST fabric.<br />
<br />
Since my fabric is heavy in weight (a non-woven medium weight utility fabric) but sheer, I decided to flatline everything with a white cotton. I'm so glad I did. The extra heft is pretty nice:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJzqMTmjsxPNEEmQlZCVzrkqFWeM6o5D3FsghHH8EUdXUY_2Aux3ODHEe2qjaJpI2HszW0k8RMngjtq7RfnTZEeZQLwczMDG8RX4qN-YnVbWHpy50x0UPe-UeMF2HF2Kgq3ipmk3XOpOBl/s1600/IMG_7043.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="377" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJzqMTmjsxPNEEmQlZCVzrkqFWeM6o5D3FsghHH8EUdXUY_2Aux3ODHEe2qjaJpI2HszW0k8RMngjtq7RfnTZEeZQLwczMDG8RX4qN-YnVbWHpy50x0UPe-UeMF2HF2Kgq3ipmk3XOpOBl/s400/IMG_7043.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So far I've got the pieces cut:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ8Nl9PbHpksLRFYmUiWbeINZzHD7aXe8_boWGWbiiKgM0yos8EzBQWip9RVpWaRJoEZZVJpXe9_W-yQGhmkclxFJKcNoRgiQtPHicUsYq-kZWjjmdvodlSh5I8-QONR8mFNROFCR6m4a0/s1600/IMG_7035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ8Nl9PbHpksLRFYmUiWbeINZzHD7aXe8_boWGWbiiKgM0yos8EzBQWip9RVpWaRJoEZZVJpXe9_W-yQGhmkclxFJKcNoRgiQtPHicUsYq-kZWjjmdvodlSh5I8-QONR8mFNROFCR6m4a0/s400/IMG_7035.JPG" width="388" /></a></div>
<br />
The zipper inserted:<br />

I whipped up this baby present for a family friend's new little boy, and I'd love to share it. It's all my favorite essentials for a new baby, done up elephant style. I just think the fabric is adorable!!!<br />

There's also a binky strap, but I didn't get a good close up of it. I tossed in some diapers, binkies, wipes, and onesies to finish it off and I wrapped this all up in a re-usable box from Ikea. I hope she enjoys the gift as much as I enjoyed making it! I need more babies to sew for. <br />

For me, it's usually the project that inspires the fabric choice. Hence, a major question this week.<br />
<br />
I found two great fabrics at the thrift store. (Fabric Grab Bags for the win! More on that in another post...) What do I make with them?<br />
<br />
The first is a great heavyweight upholstery fabric covered in really pretty fuchsia flowers and I have about 2/3 or a yard of it. I got the piece for $.99! I'm thinking a bag perhaps, but even so, what style? Hobo? Messenger? Clutch? Lunch tote? No idea...<br />

The other great fabric find is a cotton print of knights, elves, wizards, and dwarves. It's a great bit of fantasy and perfect for a little boy. I've got close to a yard of it in three smaller cuts. Pajamas? The lining of a jacket? A bookbag?<br />
<br />

I need ideas! Where do y'all go for inspiration when it comes to finding the perfect project for a great fabric find?Jaiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14176343820988807993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4858301704564792190.post-25246824014655155582013-08-18T04:21:00.001-07:002013-08-18T04:21:48.466-07:00Fabric Store HappinessI finally had a chance to visit <a href="http://sewfisticated.com/" target="_blank">SewFisticated Fabrics</a>, a fabric store in Somerville, MA. I haven't been to that fabric store since I lived in Somerville so it was at least 6 years. It kind of slipped my mind that it existed since I do most of my fabric shopping either at Joann's or from online fabric stores. SewFisticated shouldn't be forgotten though! It's amazing in there!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiekuFBs0HtS4aLMeMddlAg8Il8K9OcHuqwkKr7hsEY0OzpweGlPpKHX_OTQAv60U2wYZRsSp8-yeTofmBfVkur735rOM7aAt3khanh3JUlXLkLya_XJhY8VFkkrE8DMrtdSFru3i6W8sFM/s1600/SewFisticated1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiekuFBs0HtS4aLMeMddlAg8Il8K9OcHuqwkKr7hsEY0OzpweGlPpKHX_OTQAv60U2wYZRsSp8-yeTofmBfVkur735rOM7aAt3khanh3JUlXLkLya_XJhY8VFkkrE8DMrtdSFru3i6W8sFM/s400/SewFisticated1.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Firstly, they are inexpensive. I don't know how they do it, but you can find designer fabrics at incredible prices. Knits are $3.99 - $5.99 a yard and knit remnants are $1.99 a yard with a 2 yard minimum. I found<a href="http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=heaven+%26+helsinki" target="_blank"> Heaven and Helsinki</a> there! I got a great cut of giant red flowers on a black jersey knit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwRm1uhijNa59bHXarkcSJFzo6kN1MlCGj8UZ2x-UsKGKGRWlB1WUIoAmeKVXpopisVosfju3Mxho7Ay1cYadfhBMe_uWe6WG6luebJG8o_XQM7ls7HePIkdFJI4l7wJxbMfWXRHuUnIFz/s1600/SewFisticated.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwRm1uhijNa59bHXarkcSJFzo6kN1MlCGj8UZ2x-UsKGKGRWlB1WUIoAmeKVXpopisVosfju3Mxho7Ay1cYadfhBMe_uWe6WG6luebJG8o_XQM7ls7HePIkdFJI4l7wJxbMfWXRHuUnIFz/s400/SewFisticated.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Quilting fabrics are $2.99 - $3.99 a yard and quilting cotton remnants are $2.49 a yard with a 2 yard minimum. I saw everything from basic batiks to Michael Miller designer prints. I got Boo a few cuts for back to school shirts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTc2xDNr82BEe80PY1d035Mk4xLK8LzwvD-0ZOsweclX8l6xrlVe-nJlUtHvviQgjrLYRsKAudQUfP77LeEJ8C4hV20BvxKlAsExkQmHNtb3hD84cWZeNpmpoC4klHq2YUaRHXO5V_YR4q/s1600/SewFisticated+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTc2xDNr82BEe80PY1d035Mk4xLK8LzwvD-0ZOsweclX8l6xrlVe-nJlUtHvviQgjrLYRsKAudQUfP77LeEJ8C4hV20BvxKlAsExkQmHNtb3hD84cWZeNpmpoC4klHq2YUaRHXO5V_YR4q/s400/SewFisticated+%25282%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I found denims for $1.99 a yard - I got two cuts for pants for Boo. I found wools for $5.99 a yard. Flannel are $3.99, home dec fabrics are $5.99, sweatshirt knits are $2.49, and shirtings are $3.99. It was just awesome!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmiRf2RgrmYN5NXU9GNvshhS0E4rw8QRjr6wnCDcYfOonbWwX2nnHIvyYF-LNf3qu5dVIpucB4QBVzLSStkGFR8CTiQzVI9dl3j7ZEzZkZvR6xzivUWFXazbrL3mRApeZNQIpGYGGWruXI/s1600/SewFisticated+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmiRf2RgrmYN5NXU9GNvshhS0E4rw8QRjr6wnCDcYfOonbWwX2nnHIvyYF-LNf3qu5dVIpucB4QBVzLSStkGFR8CTiQzVI9dl3j7ZEzZkZvR6xzivUWFXazbrL3mRApeZNQIpGYGGWruXI/s400/SewFisticated+%25281%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
They also have a giant array of dressier fashion fabrics the range from $3.99 - $8.99 a yard. They hav silks, rayon prints, satins, sequins, bridal fabrics, lace, dancewear...everything you could think of! I even snagged a few zippers which are sold there by the inch! Only $.05 per inch!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipfGbmGW4PK724BfARrKKw4JhN1aKwVboxUYb_o7ap9tAxkX-0DyqmWZqCqq3sPTjjOupOk2RHiYG7D0DqnBKDYxkvmzjagjlDhBBRsiM2pTG9FzIzPhFGwFGSNyMPO-63dqF-Sx1zRtbS/s1600/SewFisticated+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipfGbmGW4PK724BfARrKKw4JhN1aKwVboxUYb_o7ap9tAxkX-0DyqmWZqCqq3sPTjjOupOk2RHiYG7D0DqnBKDYxkvmzjagjlDhBBRsiM2pTG9FzIzPhFGwFGSNyMPO-63dqF-Sx1zRtbS/s400/SewFisticated+%25283%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Clearly, I had a blast. I can't wait to go back. I focused on fabrics for Boo clothes this time but I have a sew-for-me project brewing for October and I KNOW I'll be heading back to SewFisticated to get some of my fabrics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgasuqPIGl1ZmZn-8HzhwSGErEzoCJccn4lHDPhvGCloxAj7Z2W40VtAUaYT3ZZxwYUUxlukxGShJ_LG_Bs3kVhIUUgHtAW5miPliMzs9ENO9tzO_YYCglMQReSnX7m6s3rAqgLDQzHkipC/s1600/SewFisticated+%25284%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgasuqPIGl1ZmZn-8HzhwSGErEzoCJccn4lHDPhvGCloxAj7Z2W40VtAUaYT3ZZxwYUUxlukxGShJ_LG_Bs3kVhIUUgHtAW5miPliMzs9ENO9tzO_YYCglMQReSnX7m6s3rAqgLDQzHkipC/s400/SewFisticated+%25284%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Oh, and I'd originally gone into SewFisticated as part of my quest to find some nice cotton twill without having to order it online. Sadly, cotton twill was the only thing I couldn't find there. I guess I'll be placing an order at Fabric.com after all! <br />

Coastal Cargo Sew-Along Was A Success!<a href="http://mellysews.com/2013/08/coastal-cargos-sewalong.html" target="_blank">The Coastal Cargo Sew-Along</a> hosted by Melissa of <a href="http://mellysews.com/" target="_blank">Melly Sews</a> was a complete success! I LOVE my finished pants.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWMKIHeuRw8xnx3MZuA4aej_Km_JrMyMLOhUG96JJNX3h5TD5WZLwgDAKfAoa3skznQPE61ClrNKABVOB0KkA2uV6_JfGtVbRBE2fzyFLp6yoNNNrFCwP7FoMkm5oMKvcCUlVrJG69ZU6W/s1600/IMG_7006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWMKIHeuRw8xnx3MZuA4aej_Km_JrMyMLOhUG96JJNX3h5TD5WZLwgDAKfAoa3skznQPE61ClrNKABVOB0KkA2uV6_JfGtVbRBE2fzyFLp6yoNNNrFCwP7FoMkm5oMKvcCUlVrJG69ZU6W/s400/IMG_7006.JPG" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Why?<br />
<ol>
<li>The pattern had clear directions and was easy to follow.</li>
<li>The garment came together quickly.</li>
<li>The garment has amazing details that add so much interest to both the sewing process and the finished product.</li>
<li>My color combination and contrast fabric choice work together to make me so happy.</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ0L1MmIOxp8kkRHN6CQB2NCe6A1pME3kZAaLkZ_onR-F542zcpnNp8l5F6_-LYYFm8SInC6Vy-UU6cbfeGhMql-z2Hh0OfPh35T1kTwyv607mvum4iBTmMAfTyXuDgRKKCi58D837fhjR/s1600/IMG_7008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ0L1MmIOxp8kkRHN6CQB2NCe6A1pME3kZAaLkZ_onR-F542zcpnNp8l5F6_-LYYFm8SInC6Vy-UU6cbfeGhMql-z2Hh0OfPh35T1kTwyv607mvum4iBTmMAfTyXuDgRKKCi58D837fhjR/s400/IMG_7008.JPG" width="286" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Things I'd Change Next Time? (And yes, there will be a next time and soonly!) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRW1igzevJdHHJYRI1w-9DM4q1v-4-1DyT9LFfeNJuhxYIGSvCiNWE3r87gXcqeZyT1MxjfQ7JiUOXliP0ZVF4M67DEdDFw9MRpG-jMrc7HenntLIx4DxxZWnmT80mgTiGBPmFfgytlbna/s1600/IMG_7009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRW1igzevJdHHJYRI1w-9DM4q1v-4-1DyT9LFfeNJuhxYIGSvCiNWE3r87gXcqeZyT1MxjfQ7JiUOXliP0ZVF4M67DEdDFw9MRpG-jMrc7HenntLIx4DxxZWnmT80mgTiGBPmFfgytlbna/s320/IMG_7009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<ol>
<li>I'd make the zipper fly differently, the way I was taught in college. The pattern pieces would be the same, just the order of construction would be different.</li>
<li>I'd skip the contrast front pockets and only use the contrast for the front pocket lining. Design fail on my part, but I love the pants anway.</li>
<li>I'd use a fabric with a tighter weave. The loose weave of the cotton I chose made the pants a little more fiddly to sew than a nice twill would have, so I'm planning twill for the next pair.</li>
</ol>
<br />
Ideas For My Next Pair?<br />
<ol><a href="https://d2d00szk9na1qq.cloudfront.net/Product/6f77ead6-858c-449d-b40c-d1b6a3e5c286/Images/Large_UM-229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://d2d00szk9na1qq.cloudfront.net/Product/6f77ead6-858c-449d-b40c-d1b6a3e5c286/Images/Large_UM-229.jpg" width="320" /></a>
<li>I'm jonesing for this elephant patterned twill that I saw online at Fabric.com. I think it would make fantastic pants, especially with a contrast bias in a crazy color like lime green or day-glo orange.</li>
<li>A cranberry colored twill with a rusty orange colored contrast bias.</li>
<li>A navy blue twill with a fishy patterned contrast fabric for the cargo pockets and no bias seams. </li>
</ol>
<br />
This pattern can be used so many ways - I'm really pleased! <br />
<br />
Now for my next project, another pair of Burda pants, with a false fly and elastic waist. My little guy is potty training so easy-on pants are a must these days! They aren't as cute as the Coastal Cargos though, so I'll be making another pair of those next week!<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdpvdAw61mDhzNWXdzBJif-5IOLut2D-pUVMImy7E7LTOb9BnAjR3yxMADBAYro_PDC9DSPtGZb5ZQfF1AgTZXh4UXsfseSguz7AMkdWS_J8f_7ezRk83JZ8Ag_Ba1t0PeNDAMUXZLo2si/s1600/IMG_6981.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdpvdAw61mDhzNWXdzBJif-5IOLut2D-pUVMImy7E7LTOb9BnAjR3yxMADBAYro_PDC9DSPtGZb5ZQfF1AgTZXh4UXsfseSguz7AMkdWS_J8f_7ezRk83JZ8Ag_Ba1t0PeNDAMUXZLo2si/s320/IMG_6981.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
First, I put in welt pockets and it was love at first sight. Then I attached the side pockets and those were super cute too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpNW1FvCCgd0kFlHJIEdMXTGvp_q2ht6UeKpZqaEJzqnOnRqZ_QDoeIyfBu9TwRUJJwH-RKw7RRv7IAa_wHX-pmiD1MjunQbtKRvPWqvvMTy-AbX3MRiWL1DLUw3H5baVj9ikOCDgLC8io/s1600/IMG_6982.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpNW1FvCCgd0kFlHJIEdMXTGvp_q2ht6UeKpZqaEJzqnOnRqZ_QDoeIyfBu9TwRUJJwH-RKw7RRv7IAa_wHX-pmiD1MjunQbtKRvPWqvvMTy-AbX3MRiWL1DLUw3H5baVj9ikOCDgLC8io/s320/IMG_6982.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Second, I put in the fly. That was one snafu after another, but the end result wasn't bad. I know what to do next time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkA5i3LNpOzsTmpekKQ5CQIR5KSS5wBBgOrVrQ2cbmgRbiDEUYJZ100uraynJ-D7MyC5YnT4yJD4aiQJr_2kC_imi8UrdRhd4iOgPu8Ko6BhflAp8WpBv6CxIhL441dmq4XsmmrFpmosVa/s1600/IMG_6996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkA5i3LNpOzsTmpekKQ5CQIR5KSS5wBBgOrVrQ2cbmgRbiDEUYJZ100uraynJ-D7MyC5YnT4yJD4aiQJr_2kC_imi8UrdRhd4iOgPu8Ko6BhflAp8WpBv6CxIhL441dmq4XsmmrFpmosVa/s320/IMG_6996.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Third, I prepped my bias tape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimwDe1vYLMvtPv2AS9DaRzvFgXBhrFlWYh1fETAsAJ_3fA-v45I5mfb2X43URtMsRcGpMD-QOS5CbopEosuw9YLPqyZcWgapOaGN7l5WKkbNJU-ObtImZ81OBHkkHLza6qWtmygCCIcKEy/s1600/IMG_6977.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimwDe1vYLMvtPv2AS9DaRzvFgXBhrFlWYh1fETAsAJ_3fA-v45I5mfb2X43URtMsRcGpMD-QOS5CbopEosuw9YLPqyZcWgapOaGN7l5WKkbNJU-ObtImZ81OBHkkHLza6qWtmygCCIcKEy/s320/IMG_6977.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Fourth, I put in adorable side seams bound with my homemade bias tape. They came out fantastic and I love the way they encase the seams.<br />

Lastly, I put on the cargo pockets. I lined them with the contrast cotton print. I'll get a picture of the insides soon but trust me - it was a good choice.<br />

<br />
I'm really happy with these pants so far. I definitely want to make them again, soonly. I'd like a second crack at the fly to prove to myself that I can do it right on the first try. I'd also like to shuffle around where I put the contrast print for added pop to the pants. Either that, or I'm going to cave and buy the elephant print twill I'm craving and use that as the main fabric and a nice solid color contrast bias...so many ideas!Jaiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14176343820988807993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4858301704564792190.post-33536891134700014042013-08-12T04:07:00.000-07:002013-08-12T04:08:18.979-07:00My First Sew AlongHow super is this?! When Melissa of <a href="http://mellysews.com/2013/08/coastal-cargos-sewalong.html" target="_blank">Melly Sews</a> and <a href="http://www.blankslatepatterns.com/products/the-coastal-cargos" target="_blank">Blank Slate Patterns</a> announced her Coastal Cargos Sew-Along last week, I decided to take the plunge and join in. I've been eying the pattern for those adorable cargo pants for a while and it seemed the perfect reason to bump them to the top of my queue. I downloaded the pattern, joined the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/BlankSlatePatterns/" target="_blank">Blank Slate Patterns Facebook Group</a>, and raided my stash.<br />
<br />
The pattern calls for a bottomweight type fabric so I chose a springy green cotton woven with a small amount of heft out of my stash. I also grabbed the zipper and the thread from stash.<br />

<br />
I wanted a fun contrast print for pockets, linings, and homemade bias tape, so I went to the fabric store and found a great cotton print in the children's section. It's got all of Boo's favorite colors! I also think it will make great bias tape because the print is small, but large enough that it will look color blocked. We'll see if I'm right, but I have high hopes.<br />

<br />
I am on a quest to make my son Boo's preschool wardrobe. I want him to have cute clothes, interesting clothes, comfortable clothes, well made clothes, clothes that allow him to run and play. I don't want him to have cheap clothes that will fall apart, clothes with logos on them, clothes that say "Daddy's Lil' Sport" or other goofy sayings. I want clothes in colors other than blue, green, brown, and black. Unfortunately, that sort of children's clothing is only available at posh boutiques that our current budget will not allow. Even if it did, I couldn't grasp spending that sort of money on clothes that would be outgrown so quickly at his age. <br />
<br />
I plan to do some shopping for him at Target for the basics like undies and socks and some shopping at our local Saver's (I LOVE THRIFT SHOPS!) for jeans and and a jacket but I have a list of about a dozen items that I want to sew myself to add some pop into his wardrobe and express his already vibrant almost-3-year-old style. He will be starting his very first day of school in just over a month so I'm sewing up a storm.<br />

My latest project is a pair of <i>adorable </i>little capri pants. I used a <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CC8QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.simplicity.com%2Fp-6933-burda-style-pants.aspx&ei=_roCUoSgB6jc4APehIHgBw&usg=AFQjCNGKSrTUhKuhvYFzGiiU6bjjfqtoxA&sig2=ASor83Ixd8JxDAgaum4R5g&bvm=bv.50310824,d.dmg&cad=rja" target="_blank">Burda Kids pattern from my stash, number 9793, view B</a>. I had a remnant of <a href="http://www.joann.com/home-decor-fabric-crypton-brushed-twill-tempest/xprd881624/" target="_blank">grey cotton twill</a> that I purchased at Joann's a long, long time ago that I wanted to use, but it was a tad too small to lay out the entire pattern on to. Never fear! I pulled out a fun two-tone grey cotton remnant from my stash and used that to make the rear patch pockets and to line the front pockets. Perfect!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO2PKtfICcJCv-N2XqvxI2j87aJO7My2sep1dhcYcdQ5EkFVabof_8aomRqb-VFbOp6zKVVh-ETFqLBh3k0GkazCUVeeRy9He-JOerRf7TO7c7YbhXH-_4ONrNYSkaCaNKlaaRKvbdL4qX/s1600/IMG_6846.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO2PKtfICcJCv-N2XqvxI2j87aJO7My2sep1dhcYcdQ5EkFVabof_8aomRqb-VFbOp6zKVVh-ETFqLBh3k0GkazCUVeeRy9He-JOerRf7TO7c7YbhXH-_4ONrNYSkaCaNKlaaRKvbdL4qX/s320/IMG_6846.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The pants were quite easy to make. It was my first time using this Burda pattern, and like usual, those Germans can really write a pattern. It was simple and clear to follow with the exception of the fiddly bits at the fly. Luckily I have made a lot of pants in the past (Back in the day, I made 19 pairs of overalls in one week for Disney!) so it wasn't a problem to figure it out on my own. I still think these were quite easy.<br />

I really like the details on these. They are elastic waist pants but they have a fake fly so they look a little more polished. The elastic drawstrings at the bottom hems look sporty and fun on a little boy. My favorite it my my contrast pockets though. The body of the tee shirt is a jersey knit printed with adorable castles and dragons that was reclaimed from a thrifted baby blanket I purchased at Savers for $2.00. The back of the blanket is a solid white jersey knit with a cool embroidered castle on it. I think it will be used as a pocket patch on a later tee shirt.<br />
<br />
The sleeves were cut from an old navy blue polo shirt of mine that I only wore a few times. The shirt fit me all funny after I accidentally threw it in the dryer one day so I'm glad I was able to finally find a good use for it. I also used the navy blue fabric to bind the collar.<br />
<br />
I think this time it all worked! I used Burda 9614 again, only this time with long sleeves. I thought the shirt would have greater visual appeal if the sleeves provided a greater contrast to the large expanse of white.<br />

Boo loves his new shirt and I do too. It's been added to his back-to-school clothes pile (is it back-to school if it's the first day of preschool?) and he can't wait to wear it.<br />
<br />
I can't wait to get back to Savers and hunt for more baby blankets. The prints are great, the price is right, and there is a LOT of fabric in each. I still have the whole back of the first blanket PLUS a very long piece of light blue knit binding that I saved when I took the blanket apart. I'm sure that will come in handy one day too.<br />

It went together quick and easy and looked great...until I got to the neckline. Somehow I botched it BIG TIME.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMlQs_66NSmkFrLwJTKWyQxhHXiaNttvuhjMbXKoEDBGCLV1wBa5JN7wByVuHiHaTazdmAnTUeeWoqz53lmmsSVh0ycCzOEwiCEc_9BPlE9rNa7tNWhXgU6ePvhLFG4797CYdIff02Maub/s1600/IMG_6830.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMlQs_66NSmkFrLwJTKWyQxhHXiaNttvuhjMbXKoEDBGCLV1wBa5JN7wByVuHiHaTazdmAnTUeeWoqz53lmmsSVh0ycCzOEwiCEc_9BPlE9rNa7tNWhXgU6ePvhLFG4797CYdIff02Maub/s400/IMG_6830.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">See the wonky neckline?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I serged the binding before I sewed it on...and then I serged it after I stitched it to the neckline. I thought I was being smart and securing it well. What I really did was turn it into a stiff, wonky mess. I put the shirt on Boo and the collar was practically 3-D, standing up off of his chest. It was bad. Luckily my little boy is the sweetest toddler ever. He told me it was beautiful and he insisted on wearing it to bed.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fail!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
After seeing my epic failure and doing a few hours of internet research while eating a comforting bowl of chocolate ice cream, I came up with a new plan to tackle necklines on tee shirts. I tried again. This time I took a bright blue tee shirt from the thrifted pile to use as the fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdbFcrTa-69xPqf7jpn22_F19RxoMTnadB2iX-uPMMSa60q-2h5ArbagZDmxulg8JkPt03wcnTt_XaMyRk3CEFMDcc3DhsY2fxGG1vg36pu2mMVSGMVPWhBD7QbjpVUQIFGrcEX17f9bOw/s1600/Alligator+Shirt+%25284%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdbFcrTa-69xPqf7jpn22_F19RxoMTnadB2iX-uPMMSa60q-2h5ArbagZDmxulg8JkPt03wcnTt_XaMyRk3CEFMDcc3DhsY2fxGG1vg36pu2mMVSGMVPWhBD7QbjpVUQIFGrcEX17f9bOw/s400/Alligator+Shirt+%25284%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
The tee shirt came along nicely. I'm still not thrilled with the neckline but it's 100 times better. I followed a great online tutorial and it came out neat, smooth, stretchy, and attractive. Then I made the mistake of "stitching in the ditch" rather than just plain top-stitching. It looks fine but the perfectionist in me thinks it's too messy looking. I know that no one else but me will ever notice the difference but I still plan to change it for all future shirts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBEhmuMc4YI5-bdmdLIwQGk00cLRGDLqmvc0qvyeXgvRsnu7fu73cILquH219VXR-QZJMsmx2zB73xX-R5DApfDuiGy-qT5K5YBxBZ-mAApdtIRL9P_Jth9UKB85_hFfdz-W5p3gu0xdaK/s1600/Alligator+Shirt+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBEhmuMc4YI5-bdmdLIwQGk00cLRGDLqmvc0qvyeXgvRsnu7fu73cILquH219VXR-QZJMsmx2zB73xX-R5DApfDuiGy-qT5K5YBxBZ-mAApdtIRL9P_Jth9UKB85_hFfdz-W5p3gu0xdaK/s320/Alligator+Shirt+%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Since the end result of tee shirt attempt #2 was a plain, boring, but well crafted blue shirt, I decided it needed some embellishment. I stenciled a dark green alligator near the hem in the front and embroidered the outline and some details in a brighter shade of green.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Win!</td></tr>

And by "gym bag", I mean a reusable grocery store tote bag from Shaw's. A giant hole ripped into the side of it and things would fall out in a trail behind me as I left the locker room. I was annoyed about having to go to the store and replace it. Then I remembered that I sew. Isn't is a great looking bag?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTJMTpdxlsLJWu9-VSoCEviRe8kJ_fDc4GSWVdrledZWCIMHLFxsc5JS4F4pHuDcbSJQtiDN3tiGmKkHcpEuZ2XAYH_IXvJJBIR_NBOfW6cFUKw-Q6gi2e7ApjgFLtk3A-rCxKW0dR7UDh/s1600/French+Print+Gym+Bag+(4).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTJMTpdxlsLJWu9-VSoCEviRe8kJ_fDc4GSWVdrledZWCIMHLFxsc5JS4F4pHuDcbSJQtiDN3tiGmKkHcpEuZ2XAYH_IXvJJBIR_NBOfW6cFUKw-Q6gi2e7ApjgFLtk3A-rCxKW0dR7UDh/s400/French+Print+Gym+Bag+(4).JPG" width="392" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I found a fantastic old pattern in my stash for this giant gaudy beach bag - so I stripped off all the trim and glitz to make it perfect for the gym. I also used a gorgeous piece of decorator fabric that had been in my stash for at least 10 years. I was saving it for "something special" which we all do when we have a piece that we treasure. Well, what better use than a gym bag that I haul around Every Day? I'll get to see it all the time!<br />
<br />
The fabric is a pastoral French print with a young woman and lots of flowers and swirls. I love it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKUgxlLog1KYFdP3n1W0G7uco8YBiAHwTSZuW3K5FUAhFESDuIKz6EfpdF6cHqPQ2h0SKzjjHOEY9qPCTnu0D7YayjCbMewnVahc9xZ5O5wA6OBZKVbc_dIKd1Mgki9gqV9I7Zgyhy9aVs/s1600/French+Print+Gym+Bag+%25286%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKUgxlLog1KYFdP3n1W0G7uco8YBiAHwTSZuW3K5FUAhFESDuIKz6EfpdF6cHqPQ2h0SKzjjHOEY9qPCTnu0D7YayjCbMewnVahc9xZ5O5wA6OBZKVbc_dIKd1Mgki9gqV9I7Zgyhy9aVs/s400/French+Print+Gym+Bag+%25286%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
It's way too fancy for the gym and it's way too fancy for the bag I made it into but I love it anyway. It makes a day at gym a little more glamorous. And don't you love the way the swirls and the notched top lined up so nicely?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFhATxxYzsHisUlHXazbvVFcd9du02giQgvWlpfViCwlGLnW9JMB0m1OYI6EuXL_zdrtZMcFZaC4K-lj6TbZpV7wDPaOP2be-_DXUrejHlSxV9Oz53Zy4zHlevoC5Sao1BrOLb_0iWjDau/s1600/French+Print+Gym+Bag+%25285%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFhATxxYzsHisUlHXazbvVFcd9du02giQgvWlpfViCwlGLnW9JMB0m1OYI6EuXL_zdrtZMcFZaC4K-lj6TbZpV7wDPaOP2be-_DXUrejHlSxV9Oz53Zy4zHlevoC5Sao1BrOLb_0iWjDau/s400/French+Print+Gym+Bag+%25285%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I lined the bag with a simple blue cotton, stitched in a pocket and a (wonky) label, and called it wonderful.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAD1TgvvrLbKv-RKfQVkd4jt4vcYDTQNu69nwvPVt5hxf2sR3LI1TpXiUUSmyXCPQpyuY99oVpeSMdkCttD5IQt0VHhTJ0C9drcVok3sgZziAQMrS2kaWeJPj-mo4fO66COjSZBzPhmxy9/s1600/French+Print+Gym+Bag+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAD1TgvvrLbKv-RKfQVkd4jt4vcYDTQNu69nwvPVt5hxf2sR3LI1TpXiUUSmyXCPQpyuY99oVpeSMdkCttD5IQt0VHhTJ0C9drcVok3sgZziAQMrS2kaWeJPj-mo4fO66COjSZBzPhmxy9/s400/French+Print+Gym+Bag+%25281%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
As for that wonky label...I really need to figure out a way to make labels for my garments and accessories that look neater. I know I should just get some professionally made with my logo but that's out of the budget for now. Until then, I'm going to experiment with cotton tape and permanent ink stamping, I think. This is getting ridiculous. I need labels as well crafted as my goods.<br />

My little guy, Boo, will be 3 in September. That means preschool is starting for us in a few weeks! Like a good sewist mother, I'm chomping at the bit to whip up some back-to-school clothes for his first year. Unfortunately, there are very few patterns to be found. For every 100 adorable patterns for a little girl there is 1 single pattern for a little boy. Most of them are boring. Some are just plain ugly. A lot of them use knits.<br />
<br />
There are some adorable patterns to be found though. I found some fantastic patterns! Here is a list for reference.<br />

Not bad, eh? It's a great list, but it's ALL I found. At least, all I found that was interesting and fun. I'll keep adding to the list if I find more.<br />
<br />
Another great find was <a href="http://www.ottobredesign.com/" target="_blank">Ottobre Designs</a> magazine. I need to get my hands on the children's editions of those!<br />
<br />
Now, there is a small hurdle. I have little experience sewing with knits. Very little. In all my years of working in costume shops, I never really worked with them. It just never came up. So...clearly I need to get on this. Boo needs cool clothes made by his mom.<br />
<br />
I decided to dive right in and I chose a pattern from my stash as a test pattern. Burda, 9614. Cute, simple tee shirts made out of cotton jersey. <br />
<br />

<br />
I paired the pattern with a simple blue striped knit from my reclaimed tee shirt pile and started cutting. Here's what I've got...<br />
<br />

<br />
I need to find a neck binding tutorial next. I think I know what to do, but I really want some tips. Wish me luck!<br />

They weigh about a pound and are stuffed with fabric goodness. Last week I was there (with a 50% off coupon!) and scored two amazing finds.<br />
<br />
I got this one for $1.50 (originally $3.00) and I think it was totally a steal. It contained a whole pile of 1 yard cuts of vintage style floral prints. They look very 70's and might just be that old. I wonder if someone planned to make a quilt and finally gave up after 40 years of procrastinating!<br />
<br />

I've got about a yard of each and I want to make a little girl's dress out of them. I'm thinking either something prairie style or something Belgian style.<br />

If the pieces were larger, I'd be making nightgowns out of them. Since I've only got the 1 yard of each, I'm considering handkerchiefs. I got a second bag during that trip. It was mostly chuff but there was one incredible gem that I couldn't resist! Look at that yellow polka dot happiness. It's about 2 yards of heavy cotton fabric and I just had to have it. It will become a skirt or a giant tote bag. I haven't decided.<br />

Dolman sleeves are my new favorite.<br />
<br />
I'm currently working on perfecting a pattern for a cute cotton tee with Dolman sleeves. I've worked up the first sample and I really like it. It definitely needs a few tweaks, but the look is what I was hoping for! The best part? The whole thing takes about 1 yard of a main fabric and about 1/4 a yard of a contrast fabric! How's that for a stash-buster?<br />

My niece managed to score a great haul by finding 2 band tee shirts, a lace blouse, a brand new "Pink" hoodie, and a black tank top, all for $22. I was not having the same luck. It was a combination of nothing really speaking to me and Boo having a toddler tantrum.<br />
<br />
Why was he having a tantrum? Because he is two and he found the toy to end all toys in Savers. And he wanted it. He found a Corvette that was "Boo sized", as he put it. I have to be honest. I was tempted. It worked. It was only $19.99. It was adorable. I kind of wanted it myself. It was the sort of thing that every kids yearns for and most parents can't afford. It was sitting right on front of us, and I wanted to buy it too. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWivhmCRpE8oXTabCMQNIpF-wHvy1hQhq2vCqmVnCZJ2P6dpAhMxVAHEov4OtUP_BdzipesDUmradzdvIWnHI9QmzRoF7S0I-8JQgaKyLbGjesfw1l9b0jSkGSsAHxlQYiwMUkM2nTrQoB/s1600/photo-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWivhmCRpE8oXTabCMQNIpF-wHvy1hQhq2vCqmVnCZJ2P6dpAhMxVAHEov4OtUP_BdzipesDUmradzdvIWnHI9QmzRoF7S0I-8JQgaKyLbGjesfw1l9b0jSkGSsAHxlQYiwMUkM2nTrQoB/s320/photo-2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Sadly, reason kicked in and we had to walk away. First of all, it was too big for my car. Second, we had no place to drive it. We live on a busy side street and our driveway is short and sloped. Third, money is tight this month and the car was just unnecessary. I'm keeping my eyes peeled though. If I see another one, reason may not win.<br />
<br />
As for my own finds, I got a great tin. That was a fun find. It was .99 and in great condition. It's going into my studio to store buttons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I also found a gorgeous Tuscan platter with a great floral design in some really bold colors. I didn't purchase it because it was cracked but I made sure to get a lot of photos to add to my inspiration boards. I'd love to make this into a fabric!<br />
<br />

That's it for this trip. Hopefully we'll make it back again on Friday for a second round. We only made it through half the store!Jaiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14176343820988807993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4858301704564792190.post-39452480815020013372013-06-04T04:36:00.000-07:002013-06-04T04:36:14.532-07:00ThriftingToday is thrift store day. About twice a month, Boo and I spend an afternoon trolling the racks at our local <a href="http://www.savers.com/" target="_blank">Saver's</a>. He loves to pick out "tchotchkees" and books and can spend hours sitting in my shopping cart playing with old toys even when he knows we won't be buying them. I love to look for vintage linens, handmade quilts and afghans, fun shoes for sock photo shoots, vintage pyrex for my sister's collection, and bags of cast-off craft supplies. I also tend to look for funny tee shirts for Boo, cool jewelry and handbags for me, sweaters for The Mister, and oddles of clothes all around.<br />
<br />
It's a treasure trove of goodness the size of a supermarket and I love <br />
<br />
Today's list of items that I'm actually looking for includes:<br />
<ul>
<li>Small shelving for my craft-studio-in-progress*</li>
<li>Cork boards</li>
<li>Picture frames, hopefully with mats</li>
<li>Picnic basket</li>
<li>China and/or crystal plates and bowls for a styling a photo shoot next week </li>
</ul>
This week we will be joined by my 17 year old niece, an adorable style maven. She is barely 5 feet tall with a perfect teenaged figure and she LOVES fashion. That means that she is a dream come true to play dress up with. She'll try on anything! She's never really thrifted before today but I think she'll take to it. I showed her some of the famous designer made garments that I've found (Michael Kors blouse, Rag and Bone jeans) and she was intrigued. I also pointed out that she could get some of her favorite brands for up to 90% off retail and she was sold. Hopefully I can steer her to some J.Crew, Banana Republic, and the like as opposed to Old Navy and Aeropostale. Fingers crossed!<br />
<br />
Stay tuned! I'll do a recap later today and post the find goodies that we unearth!<br />

*Craft Studio In Progress - Later in the week I'll post on this, but I'm back to putting together my studio! Boy is it a wreck but it should be functional in about a week. As for being pretty and attractive, well, hopefully by Thanksgiving...<br />

I love the way they turned out. Right now they are in simple dollar store frames because I just couldn't wait to see them behind glass, but the plan is to properly frame them next week.<br />
<br />
Let's take a sneak peak, shall we?<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
They are very similar but not identical and I'm thinking that a third panel might be nice, perhaps one with just clouds and maybe a seagull...along with a sailboat of course. Or maybe one with a pirate flag!<br />
<br />
Anyway, now it's time to decide on the framing. I'm thinking a nice wooden frame stained in a honey color and a plain white mat. Another option would be a aged gold or brass frame to mimic the hardware that is often seen on boats. My husband suggested a frame made of rope from the rigging of a sail, but I thought that would be too literal.<br />
<br />
Any ideas?Jaiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14176343820988807993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4858301704564792190.post-57104850071237809792013-05-28T13:49:00.000-07:002013-05-28T13:49:03.968-07:00Sailboats!I recently decided that my bathroom needed some handmade help. It needed art. So, after some thought, I decided that I'd make two felt panels to frame and hang on the wall over the towel rod. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgznoQD0zW01ak_PYi_OJrpWe9oZS4D9LcUHH3wtEzZJsyA4ETwn7umTj6ix3yVdN7tugowDWhjar2F0-S2PFsQOgk7u68v9VBv-XlJF4UducjvY5FGahorsf16LckhCK8FMPLA7VZjdRXy/s1600/IMG_6659+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgznoQD0zW01ak_PYi_OJrpWe9oZS4D9LcUHH3wtEzZJsyA4ETwn7umTj6ix3yVdN7tugowDWhjar2F0-S2PFsQOgk7u68v9VBv-XlJF4UducjvY5FGahorsf16LckhCK8FMPLA7VZjdRXy/s320/IMG_6659+(2).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My idea was to make the panels into landscapes of sailboats in the water. The Mister loves the ocean so I knew he'd be thrilled with them which is key since he's a mega critic of home decor. In order to make them blend in with the current decor in there, I went with a color scheme of blue and browns and cream. The shapes of the boats are simple, very geometric, and they are embroidered on to the felt. I decided on two complementary panels as opposed to two identical panels.<br />
<br />
I took the above shot as I was working on the layout of the first panel. I'm still working on the design of the second, but this one is almost done!<br />
<br />
Now...what kind of frame should I use?<br />
<br />

The greens are greener, the smells are fresher, and the leaves and petals shine with the droplets of water.<br />
<br />
My garden looked particularly lovely today, which impressive because it's been abandoned for many years. The Mister is working hard to restore it to it's glory days when it was tended by my master gardener grandmother but it's a long haul and my black thumbs are no help. Even so, it managed to show beauty on this rainy day:<br />

The colorway is called Rainforest and I love it. It's such a lovely mix of greys, blues, and greens. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It's so squishy!!!</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
It's spinning up into a muted blend that looks like a thunderstorm. My single is gorgeous.<br />

<br />
I plan on spinning up two bobbins and plying them together for a simple DK weight sock yarn. The best part? I still have no idea what it will really look like. That's what I adore about spinning.<br />
